I went to the 15 day American Flyers CFI course in Florida and the lead instructor spent quite a bit of time drilling into our heads that a stall recovery does not need to be scary or dramatic. Just lower the nose below the critical angle of attack and recover. I also enjoyed the post on getting your AGI and AGI. I'm taking the AGI test this week to keep my FOI written from expiring. I'm looking forward to reading more of your writing. I talked to her several times during the process of converting it from a single-pilot certificate to a multi-pilot one. I was going to ask about this at the FSDO when I was there this month to renew my CFI again, but I ended up submitting the paperwork online instead. I'm glad you got the word straight from them, and thanks again!Larry M. If that's ...Hi Phillip, and thanks for asking.

If that's the way the FAA used to do it, that might explain why the "AGI is a BGI + IGI" misconception is so common. The FAA definitely doesn't do it that way now. The requirements for ground instructors are listed in FAR Part 61 Subpart I -- Ground Instructors: http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=19a7c8fe666a0857db1714309cb24b92&mc=true&node=sp14.2.61.i&rgn=div6

As I noted in part 3 of this post, the BGI written exam only includes questions at the Sport, Recreational, and Private Certificate levels. The AGI adds questions at the Commercial and ATP level. Neither of them covers instrument topics at all. This is most easily seen in 61.213(a)(4)(i-iii), which is below:

(4) Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas in—

(i) For a basic ground instructor rating §§61.97, 61.105, and 61.309;

(ii) For an advanced ground instructor rating §§61.97, 61.105, 61.125, 61.155, and 61.309; and

(iii) For an instrument ground instructor rating, §61.65.Larry M. "IT" is everywhere people are, .e.g., religion, politics, history, law, investing, police, and...now aviation! Confirmation bias is why science is so difficult for so many, it forces us to consider evidence that disconfirms our beliefs. Of course one can not overlook the possibility of "hindsight bias" on the part of the author :)mbmckinleynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206312708792080007.post-565863655775466342013-11-21T20:14:28.037-05:002013-11-21T20:14:28.037-05:00I'm glad I could help. I've found that hours of lectures on situational awareness or other aviation subjects is nowhere near as effective as five minutes of "This is what happens when you don't pay attention to [insert subject here]" stories.Larry M.
